Laparoscopic Spays
The Doctors and staff at Ingersoll Animal Hospital are proud to announce the addition of a new, exciting and less stressful procedure that is available for your cat and dog.
Female animals have been sterilized with a traditional spay for years. The traditional procedure requires a 3"-6" abdominal incision depending on the size of the animal. Two ligaments, called the suspensery ligaments, are broken down blindly to free the ovaries from their attachments on the body wall. This tearing may cause bruising and postoperative pain. The vessels to the ovary-uterus are then sutured and these structures are removed from the abdomen. The abdominal wall is then sutured. These sutures typically require a return trip to the clinic in 10-14 days for their removal. Traditional spays required significant tension on the ovaries and uterus which may cause trauma and bleeding and significantly contribute to post-operative pain.
Minimally invasive laparoscopy can now be used to achieve the same outcome with reduced post-operative side effects. In most cases performing a laparoscopic spay only requires 2 to 3 5mm-10mm incisions. The vessels and supporting structures to the ovary and uterus are ligated with a special cautery instrument. After the reproductive system has been freed from its attachments it is removed through the small incisions in the body wall. Most patients are able to go home the same day!
Advantages of Laparoscopic Spays over Traditional Surgery:
- Recent studies have shown that patients spayed laparoscopically
have less surgical stress and up to 65% less post-operative pain. - The entire surgery is performed through a few tiny incisions
rather than a larger abdominal opening. Smaller incisions are less
painful and reduce recovery time. - Laparoscopy allows for better visualization of abdominal organs.
- Controlled incisions eliminate pain and bruising caused by the
tearing of tissue associated with traditional spays.
Dogs and cats can now be given the same surgical options as people and have the ability to benefit from laparoscopic procedures. If you have any questions on this procedure or any other minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure please call and ask our doctors and staff about this exciting new procedure available in our quest to provide the best possible quality care to all of our patients.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Rigid laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique for viewing the internal structures of the abdomen. A laparoscope (camera) inserted through a small incision in the abdomen magnifies internal l structures of the abdomen on a TV monitor for a more thorough examination. Additional small incisions are made to facilitate the use of surgical instruments. The most common application of laparoscopy is biopsy. In recent years, laparoscopy has been adopted as a less traumatic and less painful alternative to traditional spays. We are equipped to do abdominal surgery and biopsies of abdominal organs such as the liver and intestines, cryptorchid (retained testicle) neuters and spays.
Advantages:
- Smaller incisions
- Minimally invasive
- Can be an alternative to major surgery
- Can be used to determine if surgery is necessary
- Provides faster recovery
- REDUCES PAIN FOR YOUR PET
- Can help accurately diagnose your pet's condition so that an appropriate treatment plan can be implemented
Bathing
Treat your pet to a luxurious bath. Our special cleansing baths remove dirt, debris and that doggie pet odor – your pet will feel fresh and revitalized. If scratching is a problem for your pet, our medicated baths contain soothing agents that stop the itching. Services also include nail trim and ear cleaning.
We have added a spa package which features luxurious color-enhancing Pet Silk Shampoo and Conditioner, and a liquid Leave-On conditioner which leaves your pet's coat silky, soft, clean, shiny, and fresh longer then any other shampoos. (Additional charge).
We have also added an Undercoat Treatment to decrease shedding (Furminator). It consists of a four-step process which removes the dead undercoat you see as constant and routine shedding, and promotes healthy skin and coat. (Additional charge).

Behavioral Medicine
Illness doesn't always have a physical cause. We employ trained animal behaviorists who help determine the cause of disorders such as separation anxiety and obsessive behavior, and then develop a treatment regimen for the client.
Blood Transfusion
We maintain a supply of blood for all types of pets in case of emergency. The blood is collected from donor pets that live with their owners, and all blood is carefully screened for disease.
Boarding
Pets are like our children – we feed, nurture, and lavish attention on them. Our highly qualified kennel attendants do the same when you can't be there. We provide tender loving care (such as brushing and cuddling) to keep them happy and active.
Fully Stocked Pharmacy
We stock a wide range of the best veterinary drugs in the animal health care field.
Chemotherapy
We are proud to offer chemotherapy to our cancer patients. Chemotherapy will extend our patients' duration and quality of life. Fortunately, pets have very minimal side effects from chemotherapy.
Dental Care
Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet's teeth. We use modern and safe ultrasound to clean each tooth thoroughly - above and below the gum line. Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. We have recently added a premium dental X-ray unit to our hospital. Advanced dental care is available, including root canals, caps, and braces.

This is an important aid for dealing with chronic or severe ear infections.
